

The Loman family used to made flutes, and they were able to make a good living by simply traveling around the country and selling them. The flute music that is drifting in and out of the play is a symbol of the faint link between Willy, his father and the outside world. Willy’s fixation with the superficial characteristics and personality causes him to put his hope on Biff. The characteristics of being well-liked and being personally attractive will guarantee success and acquire the material comforts that they deserve.

The Loman family believes in what they consider the promise of the Dream depicted in the play. Each member of the Loman family is in denial or perpetuating a cycle of denials living in their own version of the “dream”. In death of a salesman, through the use of symbols, Arthur Miller exposes to the audience the false dream the Loman family is desperately trying to grasp on and a representation of the end of each version of “dream” for the Loman family which eventually causes their misery. The other symbolic thing in this play would be all his “business trips”. His wife had to fix the stockings she had because they were breaking, while the other lady had brand new stockings. There is very little symbolism in the play but it was very significant. Symbolism is the practice of representing things by means of symbols or of attributing symbolic meanings or significance to objects, events, or relationships. Symbolism is another element Arthur miller used in his play. He has this concept of an “ideal family” and he thinks his family is like that. Throughout the story we see that he has a hard time accepting reality. He is a salesman in his mid sixty’s and is delusional. The Protagonist of a story is the main character, which in this play is Willy Loman. The other places that are not really mentioned are those where he traveled to because of his job. It also takes place in Boston, which is where his affair took place.
